City of Olympia & Thurston County: Basics of Getting Arrested & Bail

Where Will I Be Held?

If you are arrested within the City of Olympia, you will be transported outside of the city for jail. Olympia no longer has its own corrections facility.

If you are arrested for a misdemeanor, you will held at Nisqually Corrections Center.

If you are arrested for a felony, you will be transported to Thurston County Corrections Facility.

Bail – Long Wait Times

If you are able to post bail for your loved one, please note that there can be lengthy wait times to be processed. The jail staff must attend to corrections duties and, at times, there is not enough staff to process bail and release in a timely manner. This may be relevant if you are trying to post bail before court.

Request No Bail or Bail Reduction

In some cases, it may be less costly for the accused be arraigned while in custody (rather than bailing out and appearing in person). The defendant’s attorney can then request no bail and, if the accused is PR’d, they will be released without the need to post bail. If you do wait for an in custody arraignment and the accused is subsequently released, be aware that releasing inmates after a court hearing may take several hours or more.

Bail – Nisqually

If you are posting cash bail for your loved one’s release, you can do that 11702 Yelm Highway SE Olympia, WA. You cannot use a credit card or personal check to post bail. You must use cash. If your loved one was arrested with cash on their person, that cash can be used for bail. This is true unless the cash is evidence of a crime.

If you want to know the best time to post bail and avoid waiting for jail staff, you can call (360) 413-3019 to reach Nisqually Corrections Center.

Bail – Thurston County Corrections

If your loved one is held at Thurston County Corrections Facility, the location to post bail will depend on the day and time.

If you are posting bail during regular courthouse hours, you should go to the court clerk’s office where the criminal charge originates. For example, if your loved one was arrested for DUI in Thurston County, you would post bail at the District Court Clerk’s office. If your loved one was charged with a felony in Thurston County, you would post bail at the Superior Court Clerk’s Office. Both offices are located at 2000 Lakeridge Dr SW, Olympia.

If you are trying to post bail outside of normal courthouse business hours, you must go to the bail window at the corrections facility. It is located at 3491 Ferguson St SW, Tumwater. Give yourself plenty of time because there can be a long wait to post bail. Additionally, the release of your loved one may take an additional few hours depending on the staffing schedule.

Posting Bail – Bail Bonds

There are many reputable Bail Bonds companies in this area. They respond quickly and can usually be reached 24 hours a day. However, be aware, the bonding company will not be able to have your loved one released any faster than if you are able to post cash bail. Bail bonds companies are used when people do not have sufficient cash to post bail. They do not provide a special “release” service. So, do not get frustrated if it still takes several hours to get your loved one bailed out of jail.

Bail Reimbursement

If you posted bail and, later, there is an order to release bail, you will have to visit the court where your criminal case was charged. Any bail money collected at a correction facility is forwarded to the specific court where the charges are filed. Typically, you can visit the court clerk’s office to learn how to collect your money.

If you were charged with a felony, you would visit the Superior Court Clerk’s Office and, if you were charged with a misdemeanor or gross misdemeanor, you would go to the District Court Clerk’s Office. If you were charged in a municipal court (Olympia or Lacey), you should go to the municipal clerk’s office or call to determine if bail matters are handled through another clerk’s office. Some cities have arrangements with local district courts to handle prosecution and processing of criminal cases, including release of bail.
