Jail Alternatives & Pretrial/Probation Services – Olympia Municipal & Thurston County District Court

Following a recent meeting of the judicial bench, Judge Nogueira was kind enough to send a list of jail alternative services that Olympia Probation Services is offering to those resolving an Olympia Municipal case as well as other jurisdictions in the area. The list was provided to the Thurston County Bar and we are listing the cost of some of those services.

For those who have been ordered to wear a scram/soberlink (alcohol monitoring ankle bracelet) unit as a condition of release, Olympia probation services offers this service for $25 a day.

If you are assigned Electronic Home Monitoring (EHM), for out of area cases, this service will cost $25 a day.

If you are ordered to submit to EHM and a soberlink device, the combined service will be offered at $30 a day.

Can Everyone Do Jail Alternatives

No. There are some criminal charges that require mandatory jail. However, that does not mean an experienced criminal defense attorney can’t get the case resolved in a way that you are pleading to a lesser charge, which then allows for jail alternatives.

Additionally, even if the criminal charge could qualify for jail alternatives, this usually has to be negotiated between the defense attorney and prosecutor. When the case resolution is presented to the judge, the judge must also “check the box” that allows for these alternatives.

Will Jail Alternatives Be The Same Length As Jail Days

Typically, no. If you allowed to do EHM, the judge will impose 15 days of EHM for every required jail day. And, if you are permitted to do Work Crew (Clark County cases) or community service hours, it will depend on the city or county prosecutor as to how they translate jail time to service hours.

Terminated Programs

While the following programs are listed on the county website, they were terminated during covid and have not returned:

Day Reporting Offender Program /DR (Non-Bed Program)

Day Jail Program/DJ (Non-Bed Program)

Work Release Program/WR (In-Custody/Bed Program)

Community Betterment/Outside Detail Inmate Workers

Work Crew

Additionally, while EHM is still an option, it is no longer provided by Thurston County Corrections. You can apply for this program through Olympia Probation Services or pay for a private company, assuming the prosecutor and judge have allowed for EHM as part of your sentence.
