An arraignment is the first hearing when you are charged with a crime. People may appear after being arrested or they can receive a summons requiring them to appear at their arraignment. In Washington state, you can waive your arraignment (not have to go to court) if your criminal charge falls into one of the allowed categories in the statute. You cannot do this with a public defender because a public defense attorney is not assigned until you are at your arraignment. Always check with an attorney before you ever decide you can miss court.
